Thanksgiving turkey cookies

The girls and I made “turkey cookies” over the weekend – here’s the recipe:

1 cup butter 3 1/2 cups flour 1 1/2 cups sugar 1 tsp baking powder 4 tsp vanilla 1 tsp salt 2 eggs

Mix ingredients together – split the dough into thirds. Melt 1 1/2 oz of unsweetened chocolate – mix into one of the thirds. Divide the other 2/3 into three equal portions – mix food coloring into each to get yellow, orange and red colors.

Wrap each of the four portions separately in wax paper and refrigerate until the dough is cooled and easier to work with / not so sticky, but not so long that the dough becomes hard. Roll each portion of dough back and forth under your hands into a long snake. Cut 1/4” slices off of each roll – place on cookie sheet and shape (chocolate cuts you pinch into circle shapes for the body, colored cuts you pinch into oral shapes for the tail feathers). Put candy corn on the chocolate for the turkey’s head. Cook 8-10 min. only (keep an eye on them – take them out when they still feel soft, or they’ll end up rock-hard once they cool) at 375 degrees.

Use a spatula to remove from the cookie sheets after 1-2 minutes — don’t let them cool on the cookie sheets, or they’ll be hard to get off without breaking. I’d suggest omitting the candy corns for the legs – because these touch the cookie sheets, when I tried it they melted all over and made it almost impossible to spatula the cookies off!
