This was one of those times when I went searching for a pattern to fit the yarn that, in a fit of yarn lust, I bought while at a local yarn shop. Malabrigo Rasta – two skeins in color Azules – was just too soft, squishy and bulky for me to resist, and the colors are some of my absolute favorites. So, what to do with this impulse purchase?
I found the pattern on Ravelry, called Bitty Bump. I knit on the called-for US 15 32” circulars, and US 11 dpns for the sleeves. Unfortunately, it only went up to size 4T, and my youngest daughter is already six. So I increased the bottom ribbing length to 8.5” and picked up enough stitches on the underarms to have 25 sts on the needles when I started on the sleeves. I knit two rounds on the sleeve (instead of one) before purling one round, and then binding off purl-wise.
The top is designed to fit a smaller child, almost like a short dress or long kimono, but with my modifications, it fits nicely on my six-year-old like a sweater top. I like the original concept better, but I didn’t have anyone small enough to knit for . . . Amazingly quick, I think I finished the entire thing in one evening – a perfect last-minute baby gift, if you knitted the smallest size.Pin It
