This pattern is Shibui Mix No. 3 – another in a line of ingenious ways to mix two or more of the Shibui yarns together in a single knitting project. This “mix” is Shibui Silk Cloud (60% kid mohair, 40% silk) – one 300-yard skein in color Bordeaux – and two 191-yard skeins of Shibui Staccato (70% superwash merino, 30% silk) in color Raspberry.
Knit on US 8s, this shawl worked up quickly once I got the hang of knitting with the thin, slippery Silk Cloud in the sections that use this yarn alone. The up-side to this project – it was a pretty quick knit, taking than a week, and I love how soft and supple the yarn is because of the high silk content. The down-side – I don’t really like the finished product. It’s a little smaller than I thought it would be, based on the photos on the pattern, and I’m not crazy about the color – when I bought the yarn, I thought it would turn out much more pink (given the name “Raspberry” of the Staccato yarn).
However, I didn’t realize that you always double-strand the Staccato with the Silk Cloud, or knit with the Silk Cloud alone, and since the Silk Cloud is “Bordeaux,” I guess I can see how I ended up with more of a burgandy color. Unfortunately, I already have plenty of shawls in this color range, so I’m going to need to find someone to gift this one to.Pin It
